Eating, Drinking and Sleeping in the Castles

Castello dei Solaro a Villanova Solaro

The Castle, with its quadrilateral floor plan and four polygonal towers, completely surrounded by a large moat, was built in late 1200 by Philip of Savoy, Prince of Acaja, in order to protect the areas of Villanova and Moretta from the neighbouring Marquis of Saluzzo.
In 1332, Villanova di Moretta passed on to the Marquis of Carretto, who sold it in 1335 to the Falletti family. Conceded to the ancient patrician Solaro family, Villanova took on the name - with exception to the Napoleonic digression - has been preserved up to present time.
In 1800, the Countess Euphrasia, last member of the Solaro branch, turned the castle into a residential building, embellishing it with a wonderful park, which is still admired today. In 1830, it housed a character with the likes of the patriot and poet Silvio Pellico, a veteran of the detention policy in the Austrian fortress of Spielberg, where in 1831; the first chapters of his masterpiece "My Prisons" were first read.
1997 a new life was granted to the castle: “Ristorante Castello dei Solaro” was established under the management of the Ronco family, who still manage the building today.

The restaurant offers an irresistible array of gastronomic flavours and tastes: a journey through culture, tradition and innovation.
